Blueberries are delicious treats for dogs. Eat them just the way they are or baked in dog treats, dogs just love them while we love the nutritional properties these little blue fruits bring about.
Blueberries are rich in natural antioxidants that play an important role in preventing or slowing the buildup of oxidative damage in brain aging. Some researchers have reported that a blueberry diet may improve cognitive function in older dogs.
Blueberries are among the fruits highest in antioxidant power, largely due to their many phytochemicals:
- Anthocyanins, catechins, quercetin, kaempferol and other flavonoids
- Ellagitannins and ellagic acid
- Pterostilbene and resveratrol
Blueberries are an excellent source of vitamins C and K, manganese and a good source of dietary fiber. According to the American Institute For Cancer Research, dietary fiber can act in several ways to lower canine cancer risk, including helping with weight control. Excess body fat increases the risk of seven different cancers, and dietary fiber can increase the feeling of fullness.
